In the U.S., drug overdose deaths increased by nearly 30 percent in 2020, according to the CDC. In North Carolina, deaths were up nearly 37 percent. (Shutterstock)
ACROSS NORTH CAROLINA Overdose deaths in the United States soared by an unprecedented 30 percent during the pandemic, new numbers from the National Center for Health Statistics confirm. North Carolina was not exempt from the spike in fact, only two states reported decreased deaths.
The numbers, which recorded deaths between December 2019 and December 2020, show that an estimated 93,331 people died due to overdose in 2020, up from 72,151 in 2019.
Last year s number marked the highest number of deaths ever recorded in a single year. ....

In light of a CDC report released this week stating that 93,000 people in the U.S. died of drug overdoses in 2020, New York state Sen. Pete Harckham asked a timely question: “If we’re going to declare a state of emergency over guns, then why not declare one around opioids?” 
In a press release, Harckham, a Hudson Valley Democrat who chairs the Senate Committee on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, stated “last week, Cuomo declared a state of emergency regarding gun violence and committed over $135 million to counter the alarming rise of shootings around the state. Where is our moral outrage regarding the latest overdose statistics?”  ....
